| Chechnya - region of landmines CHECHNYA - REGION OF LANDMINES SWEEPING CHECHNYA OF MINES: MORE THAN 6,000 HECTARES OF LAND TO GO; By international standards, Chechnya remains an area of landmine hazard. The Emergency Ministry hopes to sweep Chechnya of landmines this spring. Sources in the Press Service of the Chechen government say that the citizens keep happening upon unexploded shells, antipersonnel mines, and booby traps. Echo of the past war are still haunting Chechen families. Umar Nasuhanov, 5, perished in a hand grenade explosion in Grozny on March 26. A young man collecting scrap metal died in a similar explosion in Grozny several days before Nasuhanov, and a tractor was wrecked in an explosion of some device it discovered in the Gudermes district. A country where at least one incident involving landmines occurs every six months is regarded as a region of landmine danger by international standards. Sixteen such episodes were reported in Chechnya in 2006, and almost 100 between 2000 and 2002. Three thousand and sixty-seven people suffered in landmine and unexploded shell explosions in Chechnya including 573 women (100 died), 2,494 men (604 died), and 754 children (131 died). Sources in the Main Directorate of the Emergency Ministry for Chechnya claim that mine-sweeping in the republic continues but more than 6,000 hectares of farm lands (including cultivated areas and pastures) still pose a danger. President Ramzan Kadyrov brought up the matter on his visit to the federal Emergency Ministry recently. A sapper unit was dispatched to Chechnya from Moscow. The specialists are expected to "clear" several thousand hectares of land in Chechnya over two months. Source: Nezavisimaya Gazeta, April 9, 2007, p. 15 Author: Alexander Shapovalov

| I don't belive that thing cause there are too many mines in a very small district.Remember the WW2-about 60 years has passed and still we hear the echo of that horrorable war-people still find bullets, mines and even tanks. So in my opinion it's impossible.
