| Chechen population in Jordan Chechen population in Jordan Chechen population in Jordan is about 8000 located in 4 towns: Zarka, Sweileh, Azraq Janoobi, and Sukhna. All 4 towns were established by Chechen settlers in the period 1895-1905 except for Azraq Janoobi which was established in 1933. All of Jordan's Chechen population speak their mother tongue. The dialect of residents of Sukhna is Aqqi. The first contact between the Chechen of Jordan and the Chechen back in the fatherland occurred in the year 1962 when a delegation of three people decided to visit the fatherland. Soon after this visit delegations from both sides started visiting each other and relatives discovered each other. Some found their brothers and sisters. Others found their cousins. The Chechens of Jordan took part in Jihad against Russians in both wars of 1994-96 and the current war. Many were injured and ten young men were killed and one is in captivity. Chechen in Jordan are well-thought-of and respected by the Jordanian community. They work in government offices and in the Army and in private sector. Two Chechens have reached the rank of cabinet minister, 6 reached the rank of General or higher ranks in the Army and Intelligence and some held senior governmental posts. Although Chechens are just like any other citizens of Jordan but their special ethnic background is recognized by the government. Therefor, one seat in the parliament of 80 seats is allocated for a Jordanian of Chechen origin. By Emad Arslan Head of International Cooperation Section The Customs Department of Jordan
