2008 Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation

Finally, an international training program for young people and students under 25!



The Hansen Summer Institute on Leadership and International Cooperation is an exciting new International program established at San Diego State University. It provides a unique University-based leadership experience and program in international cooperation. For three weeks, ten young American men and women will 20 students from a variety of developing countries and regions of social strife. A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an international community of young scholars who will use their summer experience as a foundation for creating lasting friendships and acquiring common practical understanding of a more peaceful future. Program elements will involve classroom instruction as well as training in the latest techniques of conflict resolution, simulations, and active role-play. The program will complement classroom training with local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and cultural events. Hansen Summer Institute training will aim to provide participants with hands-on tools for resolving conflict that can be applied and re-directed to their own situations at home.

To participate in the Hansen Summer Institute, candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

· They must be from underdeveloped countries or countries at risk of conflict

· Be under 25 years of age with at least two (2) years of college/university.

· Not have been to the United States prior to this 2008 program.

· Have an academic advisor (a professor or teacher at your university) verify, in writing, the candidate’s English proficiency. (Semi-finalists will be required to participate in a telephone interview.)

· Have a valid international passport, with US visa, if necessary, by the time the program begins.

· Successful applicants must demonstrate leadership potential by having worked outside of class in community service, another public service, or in a non-governmental organization. A letter of reference from such a group or organization is required.

The program will provide:

· International travel from the candidate’s hometown to San Diego , California .

· Housing and meals during the program (shared room with other participants of the same gender)

· Program materials

· Health insurance

· Certificate of attendance

The program will not pay for:

· The cost of an international passport

· The cost of a US visa

· The costs associated with the visa interview at the US embassy (travel to Moscow )

· Academic credit for participation (this will not count as a university course for your degree)
